After a painful breakup with her girlfriend Maxine (Rebecca Henderson), Shirin (Desiree Akwan) is completely desperate and goes to to every pub or party in Brooklyn, hoping to find the man or woman who will be able to have for one night to bury her depression and anger. Akhavan wrote, directed, and stars in the film that gives bisexuals representation rarely portrayed on the big screen. She creates a funny depiction of New York woman who is apparently independent but is basically trapped in her family’s traditional Iranian culture and modern society’s expectations that creates a lot of insecurity. “Appropriate Behavior” brings to the screen a strong, smart, witty and confident female voice that has been missing. If Woody Allen was a bisexual Iranian New Yorker this is how his film would have looked. “Inappropriate Behavior” is a real treat from start to finish.
