SqueezeBox!

USA 2008, 91 min.
Dir: Steve Saporito, Zach Shaffer
English
Screening Schedule: 27.6, 20:00

Straight from the 2008 Tribeca festival comes this fresh and happening documentary which will take you back in time to the times of Giulianni as mayor of New York. While Time Square was sold to Disney, and sex stores and porn cinemas were erased from the streets of Manhattan to make room for fast food restaurants, there was one shiny moment where drag queens turned New York’s nightlife into something truly exciting. The best party in town was called SqueezeBox which took place at Don Hill’s club. At first it was filled with rock-loving gays who felt like outcasts even among Barbra Streisand fans, as well as among straight rock fans who are usually homophobic. The party became the hottest event in New York, where drag queens would come on stage accompanied by band to play live rock songs. The colorful line of parties brought forth talents such as John Cameron Mitchell, who thanks to SqueezeBox was able to conceive Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This is a sweeping film that every music and nightlife lover, and everyone who loves New York, simply has to see.

The screening of the film will be preceded by
