This is Family
Director: Jean-Baptiste Erreca

This is Family is one of the most original documentaries on American queer life to surface in a long time. Structured like the trashiest of reality television, faux ads and all, the documentary crisscrosses the United States exposing a wide range of queer families and communities. By Paris-based filmmaker Jean-Baptiste Erreca (Gay, So What? and Cowboy Forever), the work is an all-out celebration of family alternatives, and you´ll be cheering the whole way. From the gun-toting, speed-loving trans member of the shooting club Pink Pistols to the adorable cocktail-guzzling couple of 51 years, each and every subject is a gem. We follow Dykes on Bikes zipping across moun- tains outside San Francisco, peer into the world of previously low-self-es-teemed strippers and are offered a front row seat to ball culture in New York and Chicago. Enhanced by cinematography reminiscent of a Technicolor film, This is Family is not your typical documentary. Because of its use of sophisticated graphics and top-notch cinematography, the film can best be described as a hyper-documentary-America like you´ve never seen it, through the lens of a big-hearted, expansively funny Parisian.

TLVFest Monthly Movie Club Presents:

"Prodigal Sons"
Monday, February 22 at 22:00. Tel Aviv Cinemateque

This one goes straight to the heart. Directress Kimberly Reed made one of this year's most powerful documentaries. After many years, Kimberly returns to her birthplace. She grew up in Montana, in a small country town, left her past behind and moved to Manhattan to pursue a career in journalism and cinema. Following a high school reunion, she hopes her return will help her in restoring her ties with her older, adopted brother. A sour and violent relationship is soon revealed, uncovering Kimberly's past. Prodigal Sons is not only an intimate cinematic piece, but also a journey leading to Croatia through a prison, a mental health institute, and a football field. This is a film about people who hope that a new identity can cleanse their past, only to discover that it doesn't matter who your parents were or what's your gender - you will always remain the same person. The film participated at AFI, the most important film festival in Los Angeles.
