The 8th International LGBT Film Festival will take place this year between June 8- June 17 at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, The LGBT Community Center, and in Tel Hai College. For the first time, it will occur over 10 days, with more than 120 screening slots, including about 80 features and over 100 shorts.
On opening night (June 8), the festival will give an honorary award to Wakefield Poole (77), who is considered a pioneer filmmaker, whose films are considered a revolution in the sexual liberation of the GLBT community. In 1971, Wakefield Poole made history when his pornographic-art film, “Boys in the Sand”, received both commercial and critical success in the U.S. For the first time, respected newspaper, like Variety and the New York Times, wrote reviews of a film dealing with the sex life of the GLBT community. Among his films, we can find the masterpiece “Bijou”, an impressive surrealistic film, which is considered to be one of the most artistic and unique films of the 1970s. In 1974, he created “Wakefield Poole’s Bible” – erotic and beautiful film art, which describes four stories from the Bible form a feminine point of view. In 1985, Poole reinvented himself – attending a French culinary school in New York and becoming the private chef for the designer Calvin Klein. He retired in 2003 and today he lives in Florida.
Runtime: 110 min

Director: Yair Hochner
Cast: Dvir Benedek, Guy Zo-Aretz, Liat Akta, Lucy Dubinchik, Miss Laila Carry, Ofer Regirer, Oshri Sahar, Rivka Neuman, Tomer Ilan, Yael Deckelbaum, Yiftach Mizrahi, Yuval Raz

Antarctica follows the physical, spiritual and emotional journeys of a group of gays and lesbians in the non-stop city of Tel Aviv. The movie opens with an unrelentingly graphic multi-screen visceral and visual assault as it depicts a week or month in the nocturnal life of Boaz (hunky Ofer Regirer), clean-cut businessman by day, one night stand sex-maniac by night, who prides himself on the line: “You know how many guys I bring back here?” One hook-up, in particular, jars him. Danny (Yiftach Mizrahi), a sweet, troubled teen, stops Boaz mid-petting and asks if they should talk first, or have coffee.

3 Years Later the mosaic-like plot kicks into high gear as we meet the wonderful cast of characters: Omer (Tomer Ilan), a shy librarian about to hit a milestone: his thirtieth birthday; Omer&supl;s harried lesbian sister Shirley (Lucy Dubinchik) and her on-again/off again girlfriend (Liat Ekta) who owns the local bar; Omer&supl;s slutty friend Miki (Yuval Raz), who cyber-connects with smoldering journalist Ronen (Guy Zo-Aretz) and best-selling author and past-alien-abductee Matilda Rose (Rivka Neuman).

All the characters are hoping for a change, waiting for the light – the light that will thaw their frozen hearts.

“If The Bubble and its director Eytan Fox have made you think some of the best LGBT filmmaking is being done in Israel, Yair Hochner’s Antarctica will completely convince you.” San Francisco Chronicle

“It has the most attractive ensemble cast of any movie at Outfest this year and the sex scenes are so explicit that it was (almost) enough to make me blush.” LA Daily News

“Antarctica is one of the best examples of how to film sex scenes that appeal to a discerning audience . . . The scenes have burning passion without being excessive.” CineQueer

“To be blunt, Yair Hochner&supl;s Antarctica is one of the most striking and original films I have seen in a long time.” NewYorkCool.com

A touching drama that played dozens of festivals world wide and the big winner at the 2011 Toulouse Cinespaña where it won Best Film, Best Actress and Best Screenplay. 70-year-old Axun is a housewife at a conservative Basque village when she receives a surprising phone call from the hospital: her daughter’s exboyfriend is badly hurt at a traffic accident and is in a hospital in a coma. Despite not being in touch with him and maybe because she is bored with her husband and life in the village she decides to go to the big city hospital where she meets Maite, a childhood friend she hadn’t seen in over 50 years. This encounter will spark old suppressed feelings and for the next 80 days they will experience a rollercoaster of emotions.
The new film from underground director Todd Verow will take you on a journey of sex and drugs. Drew, a young man from a small town arrives at the big city and finds himself in the surreal world of Mistress DaTina who manages an alternative sex club where sex and drugs are inseparable. At a place deplete of daylight mingle men who lust after the quick satisfaction of their sexual and narcotic desires. One of them is homeless Rob who uses the men to sleep under their roof; or Christian who needs this sex den to enjoy sex without anyone asking him for his HIV status. Lacking a real budget, Verow creates an independent and daring work about New York’s alternative sex word and the men who inhabit it. Explicit sex and graphic violence scenes.
