Following Berlin and New York, The Israeli international LGBT film festival is proud to present the third collection of project Fucking Different, this time in Tel Aviv. Following producer’s Kristian Petersen’s visit in the festival, a local version was made for the series, with the same ever-crucial question at its center: what do gay people think about lesbian sexuality, and what do lesbians think about gay sexuality? Politics, religion, age gap, transgenders, drag queens and of course sex, make only a partial list of subject in this interesting collection. And also: will Ninet Tayeb manage to escape from being kidnapped by a couple of militant dykes? (Israel, 2008, 95 min, Hebrew and English, English subtitles)

The Israeli premiere of this light and fun comedy that was a hit in many LGBT festivals around the world including those of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Chicago. It is Texas, 1982, and the world is dominated by big hair, synthetic pop music and cowboy boots. Straight Kevin likes to watch porn with his fellow College students. One day he meets Ceasar, an openly gay student, a rare phenomenon in early 1980s Texas. A weekend of stupor, porn and sexual frustration and a series of unforeseen events will make him examine his sexuality for the first time in his life. “Longhorns” is a low budget Independent film geared towards those seeking a romantic, entertaining yet unapologetic comedy that normally doesn’t make it to a theatrical release in Israel. (USA, 2011, 75 min; English without subtitles).

Preceded by:
Neon Skin (dir. Grant Scicluna; Australia 5:19 min) About a young blind man and his friend over one night of passion.
After (dir. Mark Parselli; Canada 12:30 min) A visually compelling, no dialog film about three friends fantasizing about the same football player.

Tomboy
Dir: Céline Sciamma
Cast: Zoé Héran, Malonn Lévana, Jeanne Disson
It is very clear why the Teddy jury at the Berlin Film Festival awarded director Sciamma the main prize. Sciamma is dealing here with a subject still tabooed even in Western society and she does it with gentle awe. Laure is 10, prefers to wear jeans and a T-shirt and dons a short haircut. She looks like a boy and prefers to be with them, playing football rather than with the girls playing with dolls. When she moves with her parents to a new suburb she presents herself to the other kids as Michael. She wants everyone, boys and girls, to think she is a boy. Director Sciamma manages to draw out of her cast unbelievable, chilling performances especially from her young lead. The film also won best feature at LGBT film festivals in Torino, Philadelphia and San Francisco and was selected by many critics as one of the best in 2011. (France 2011, 82 min; French with Hebrew subtitles).

After world premiering at the 2011 Seattle International Film Festival to rave reviews, it was clear that Eldar Rapaport’s first feature is about to conquer the LGBT Film Festival circuit worldwide. And that’s exactly what happened this past summer. Imagine your mythological ex showing up in your life amidst an August heatwave after a long time you haven’t seen him. That’s what happens to Jonathan when Troy returns to Los Angeles after some years spent in Spain. The two of them find themselves quickly back in each other’s arms in spite of Jonathan having a current beau, Raul, his new and sexy boyfriend. Despite its low budget Rapaport manages to make a film full of ambiance, and using his talented cast creates and a dramatic narrative about an unconventional romantic triangle. “August” won Best Feature and Best Actor at the Iris Film Festival and has recently shown at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival. Director will be present. Some welcoming notes to precede the screening.

Three Golden Globe Nominations: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song

Five time Academy Award Nominee Glenn Close returns in a role that the American press bets to be a sure Oscar win. She even collaborated in adapting the script from the short story. The film, which premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, follows the story of Albert Nobbs who resides in Ireland in the late 19th century at a time when women could not be independent. Albert was born a woman but lives his life like any man. He works as a butler at an upscale Dublin hotel while dreaming about saving enough money to open up a shop. Two youngsters who start working at that hotel put a damper on his plans. (USA 2011, 115 min, English with Hebrew subtitles)

The film also stars with Oscar, Golden Globes and Emmy Winners and nominees:
Brendan Gleeson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Brenda Fricker, Pauline Collins
And Janet McTeer.

The Israeli film council is about to hand the Tel Aviv international LGBT film festival (TLVFest) a disastrous blow.

In just 6 years, TLVFest has become one of the most important and outstanding film festivals in Israel.During its 8 days, this past year’s festival showed over 120 features and short films within 60 different programs, and welcomed 30 guests from all over the world (India, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Greece, Germany, France, UK and USA). Still, keeping over 30 percent of the festival’s content is new Israeli cinema; some of it is made possible thanks to the festival’s special competitions and initiations.
“The only criteria that prevents us from receiving our annual financial support from the Israeli film committee” says Yair Hochner, TLVFest’s director, “is that our budget is only NIS 350,000, while the committee’s new law is to support only larger-range festivals, with budgets of over NIS 500,000. I think it’s absurd – why limit the support for the benefit of the 3 biggest Israeli film festivals, which have countless contributors and finances as it is? This new law will completely eliminate the smaller, underground, more daring festivals and hurt the communities who need them like breathing”.

“TLVFest holds annual Israeli short contests and helps promote the filmmakers abroad. It also runs a pitching contest, as well as contests for the best international feature, documentary feature and international short. In 2012 we will have our first HIV-themed Israeli shorts contest.”

Nonetheless, our festival is fighting for its life on a yearly basis. We find it extremely hard trying to convince fashion, food or travel companies to commercially cooperate with us. Their greatest fear, apparently, is to be related to the gay community. And so, what keeps us alive is the money we whatever get from the Israeli film council. That’s why now, when the committee has decided to shut us down, we can’t afford to lose this fight. We are here to stay, and to give the LGBT community in Israel the cultural oasis they so desperately need. Please help us by signing our petition: www.atzuma.co.il/TLVFest and by spreading the word on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Emails, or even writing about our emergency situation in your magazine.

How to sign? When you get to the petition page, the first field of the form on the right asks for your name, and the second for your city. Then just hit the big green button, as you’d expect.

Please also write an email to Ms. Limor Livnat – Culture and Sport Minister of Israel and ask her to support our film festival and stop The Israeli film council to stop the funding.
The email of Ms. Or Doron her spoke-person: or@most.gov.il

Thank you very much, and we hope to see you in Tel Aviv next June.
